Zen

mystery-watchlist-show-zen

Based on the detective novels by Michael Dibdin, this Rome-based mini-series finds our protagonist Aurelio Zen (Rufus Sewell, The Pale Horse) struggling to maintain his integrity amidst political corruption, wealth and aristocracy, and vengeful gangsters. Things only get more complicated when he falls for Tania Moretti (Caterina Murino), the police chief’s married assistant. While only one season was made, the show is the perfect escape to the romantic back alleys of Rome.

Witness for the Prosecution

mystery-watchlist-show-agatha-christie-the-witness-for-the-prosecution

Based on the short story by Agatha Christie, Witness for the Prosecution tells the excellent and tragic tale of Emily French (Kim Catrall), a wealthy widow who is ruthlessly murdered in her London home. The prime suspect is Leonard Vole (Billy Howle), her young lover, and the show follows the investigation and subsequent trial to prove his innocence. Of course, it wouldn’t be classic Christie if there wasn’t a great plot twist at the end. Toby Jones stars as Leonard Vole’s lawyer and advocate.

Wire in the Blood

mystery-watchlist-show-wire-in-the-blood

Robson Green is brilliant as clinical psychologist Dr. Tony Hill in Wire in the Blood, a super dark and twisted series based on the books by the prolific crime novelist Val McDermid. Smart and obsessive – kind of like the killers he hunts – Hill aids DCI Carol Jordan (mystery veteran Hermione Norris, Agatha Raisin), in solving gruesome serial killings in Northern England through eccentric methods.

Whitechapel

mystery-watchlist-show-whitechapel

In an attempt to link present-day crimes with historical mysteries, Whitechapel follows the young DI Joseph Chandler (Rupert Penry-Jones) and the near retirement DS Ray Miles (Phil Davis) as they work to solve serial murders by a Jack the Ripper copycat. The show is dark and a bit overdramatic and the filming is disjointed as it first appears to be a period mystery, but it isn’t.

Wallander

mystery-watchlist-show-wallander

Based on the books by Henning Mankell, this version was created by and stars Kenneth Branagh (Murder on the Orient Express) as the brooding, existential detective Kurt Wallander. With its dark and hauntingly beautiful cinematography, the series is often hard to watch as Wallander and his team solve terrifying murders in and around Skane, Sweden. I prefer the original Swedish series Henning Mankell’s Wallander better. Dishy Tom Hiddleston stars in the first six episodes as Wallander’s right hand man, Magnus Martinsson.

Vexed

mystery-watchlist-show-vexed

This light-hearted, cheeky mystery dramedy features two mismatched detectives – Jack Armstrong (Toby Stephens) and Kate Bishop (Lucy Punch), then Jack and Georgina Dixon (Miranda Raison) – who have to balance their personal lives, their partnership, and solving their cases without driving each other mad. Lucy Punch is a comic genius in the first season, which also stars Rory Kinnear as her long-suffering husband.

Veronica Mars

mystery-watchlist-show-veronica-mars

The seaside town of Neptune, CA seems like a bucolic, affluent community but after the death of popular high-school student Lilly Kane, the veneer of the wealthy begins to crack. Seeking the truth behind her best friend’s murder, Veronica Mars (Kristen Bell) takes on exposing Neptune’s mysteries through her father’s private investigation agency. Part-noir, part-teen drama, and all snark, Veronica’s sardonic wit and pop-culture references have made this show a cult classic.

Maigret

mystery-watchlist-show-maigret

Rowan Atkinson sheds his silly Mr. Bean persona to play the serious and measured Chief Inspector Jules Maigret in these beautifully flashy adaptations of George Simenon’s classic detective stories. Set in France with British accents, the series also stars mystery veteran Shaun Dingwell (DCI Banks, Above Suspicion) and Leo Staar as Mairgret’s right- and left- hand men. The production value is sleek and noir with copious flyovers of vintage Paris, reasons alone to watch.

Based on the best-selling books by Kate Summerscale, The Suspicions of Mr. Whicher is a period drama starring Paddy Considine as the tenacious Inspector Jack Whicher. The first film in the series follows Whicher as he is called to Wiltshire to solve the grisly murder of a young boy (also based on a true story), while the following three films revolve around his life as a private investigator. The second film also stars the super talented and prolific Oscar winner Olivia Colman (Broadchurch).

The Brokenwood Mysteries

The Brokenwood Mysteries is a lovely and quirky mystery series set in the fictional New Zealand town of Brokenwood. The show stars Neill Rea as Detective Inspector Mike Shepherd and Fern Sutherland as Detective Constable Kristin Sims who solve sometimes absurd crimes in the seemingly peaceful, country town. If you are a fan of Midsomer Murders or country music, you will like this show even if the first few episodes seem like they are trying too hard.

Relying on charm and instinct, Brodie investigates several cases which at first don’t belie the dark reality of the actual crimes. Vera

mystery-watchlist-show-vera

Based on the novel series by Ann Cleeves, Vera stars Brenda Blethyn as Detective Chief Inspector Vera Stanhope in this dark and foreboding British series set in the Northumbrian countryside. While Vera comes off a bit like your Gran even calling suspects “pet”, she’s in fact calculatingly brilliant and obsessive about solving crime. The show delivers superb performances and suspenseful mysteries, and is one of my all-time favorite shows.

Midsomer Murders

mystery-watchlist-show-midsomer-murders

Murder and mayhem abound in Midsomer Murders, a dark and cheeky British whodunit series that has been killing off unwitting villagers for more than twenty years. One of my favorite comfort cozy mysteries, the show follows DCI Barnaby (John Nettles) and his young sergeant as they investigate absurd, over-the-top deaths in the bucolic Midsomer county. The first few seasons are deliciously well-done village mysteries, however, once Tom Barnaby retires and his cousin John (Neil Dudgeon, Mrs. Bradley Mysteries) steps in, the show becomes a bit less sinister. This beloved show is based on the books by Caroline Graham and is one of the longest-running shows in the UK.

Shetland

Shetland is based on the books by Ann Cleeves and the beautiful Scottish scenery alone makes the show worth watching. Scottish actor Douglas Henshall stars as DI Jimmy Perez who leads murder investigations on the blustery Scottish Shetland Isles. While the show is good, I’ve found some of the episodes frustratingly overcomplicated and drawn out. The show also stars Alison O’Donnell as DS “Tosh” and Steven Robertson (Luther) as DC Sandy Wilson.

Agatha Raisin

mystery-watchlist-show-agatha-raisin

Agatha Raisin is definitely one of my favorite mystery series ever — it’s the show I re-watch when I’m in a TV rut. Based on the books by M.C. Beaton, Agatha Raisin (Ashley Jensen) is a London-based PR guru who relocates to the Cotswolds and solves absurdly cheeky village murders with the help of her cleaning lady and stalwart friends. Armed with a smart, winning smile and lots of mood boards, Agatha isn’t afraid to show her vulnerable side and in the process solves the case. I only hope the BBC has the brains to make more seasons of this charming show.
